The Card Technology
The Chip
The new KIT-Cards contain the most commonly used contactless MIFARE chip card technology provided by NXP Semiconductors. The centerpiece is a RFID chip (Radio Frequency Identification) that uses a 13,561 MHz frequency and has a typical read/write distance of up to 10 cm. When getting close to a corresponding reader, electronic signals can be sent and received. That makes the cards ideal for contactless smart card solutions as those provided by the KIT-Card. At KIT, the MIFARE DESFire EV2 contactless multi-application IC with 8 KB memory is in use. The cards meet the requirements of ISO 7816 and ISO 14443.
Encryption
An AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) hardware cryptographic engine is used for confidentiality and integrity protection of the transmission data. AES works with 128-bit keys and is a well-established and worldwide used standard for encrypting data transmission. The key ensures that no other than the KIT applications can be used with the KIT-Cards.

Use of the KIT-Card for own applications
The KIT-Card team offers you the option to run your own applications with the KIT-Card. A special reader is used, which is provided with its own software by the KIT Card Team.
